Breastfeeding Service

Breastfeeding support is continuing

On 18th January 2018, new mothers protested outside Hope Corner Community Centre against the alleged closure of breastfeeding support services in Barnet by the Council.  This is their right, even their duty as concerned citizens, but the fact of the matter is the breastfeeding support service is not closing.

Support is being integrated with early years care

The current provider of breastfeeding support services in Barnet is the Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. The Trust was awarded the contract in 2014, a contract which expires in April 2018, and which the Council voted in 2016 not to renew. It was decided that, rather being a standalone service, breastfeeding support would be integrated into the wider support available for children and families, provided by breastfeeding buddies, health visitors, midwives, and nursery nurses.

There will be a transition period

The Council is working with the Trust to ensure there is no cliff-edge in April, and funding is being made available for a service co-ordinator to stay on for six months to provide specialist training and development to those working in the new service.
